On Thursday night I’m rushing around trying to get ready to meet Elijah’s friends. He’ll be here soon and I can’t seem to find the white heels I want to wear with the dress I recently purchased. I’ve searched every place I could think of, but they’re nowhere to be found. It’s not like there would be many places for them to go, considering I’ve barely taken anything out of this room, so I’m guessing I left them in LA.

The pastel purple sundress swishes around as I twirl and I run my hands over the skirt for a second. I’ve become so used to wearing the tight dresses Bridget always picks out for me that I forgot how comfortable loose clothing could be. Instead of molding to me like a second skin, it hangs loosely over my frame and gives me room to breathe.

My hairdresser would always pin my hair to the top of my head for dinner, because I guess it makes me look more elegant, but I decided to curl the strands and leave them down tonight. I thought a natural look would go best with this dress, so I skipped doing my makeup entirely. It feels weird not to have anything covering my features and I halfway expect Bridget to have a sixth sense and jump through the window to scold me for not putting any on.

When there’s a soft knock on the door, I quickly find a pair of silver heels and slip them on before rushing downstairs. Elijah is standing on the battered porch wearing a light blue button-up and jeans. The top few buttons are open, revealing a sexy sliver of skin, and I hold back a moan at the sight.

He stares at me for a moment before finally giving me a smile. “Mia, you look beautiful.”

Such a simple compliment and yet it sends shivers down my spine. I give him a small smile. “Thank you. You look very handsome.”

Elijah takes a step back and offers me his arm, allowing me to slip mine through it before leading me down the sidewalk. I’ve been nervous for this night, not knowing how everyone will react to my presence, but it feels good to do something normal.
